Thanks for so many kind words everyone!

As for what I learned about myself  after getting through the tough craving?  I've honestly never done something so difficult before in my life, at least not when the easy way out is right in front of me. Before that moment I never knew I had it in me. I quit with the best of intentions but kind of thought in the back of my head that it would be okay if it was too difficult and I couldn't do it. I always hear how it takes most people a bunch of times to try before they actually quit, and everyone I know who smokes says things like "The fourth time I quit I...." and I felt like that'd be me, counting my failures and promising I'd do it for real someday.

But then when I beat that craving?  Well it's been a few days now and I'm still on a high from getting over it successfully.  I have all the tools at my disposal here. I have the knowledge and the support, and now I know for a fact that I have the willpower to beat ANYTHING if I got through that. No excuse not to!

Welcome Kettles! Next week I visit the pulmonologist. I will find out if my diagnosis of asthma is really correct. After all, I smoked for about 31 years.  My oxygen levels are always at or near 100%, and my peak flow readings are normal. But I tend to have a lot of mucus. So much that I get horse. It's possible that I do have a bad post nasal drip problem  I guess. I apparently have an allergy syndrome I've been told. But still: I smoked for 31 years. Yes, please stop before your bronchitis is not reversible.  Hearing that you have COPD will not fun. I'm hoping for the best, but I am preparing myself for the worst. Hopefully, I'll just need sinus surgery.

Hello kettles  I can sure relate to what you're saying. I got to the point in my smoking ( career ) where I was having trouble breathing ( not much of a future in not being able to breathe ) My withdrawal didn't fully kick in until day 3 but I can remember it being real nasty. I was determined to go through whatever I had to go through in order to stay quit. I lived on this site from then on. You know I felt like I had the word sucker tatood on my forehead when I went in to buy a pack. Within a week there was a noticeable difference in being able to breathe. It's just got better since then. I hardly ever cough now and my clothes and even my hair doesn't smell like smoke. I used to hide ny stained fingers when I went to the doctors but I know he could see right through it anyway. I suggest having lots of ice water to drown the craves and also healthy snacks. I found that reading Alan Carrs Easy Way to Stop Smoking really helped and reading all the posts here. We know what you're going through ( and it isn't easy ) but we also know that it's possible to stop smoking bacause we've done it and you can as well. I wanted to stop more than I wanted anything else. You're the most important person here. I didn't know that I had a choice but know now that I do. breather breathing better

Alright Kettles a job well done.  You pushed that old desire right down to its knees.  That is a major victory.  And about crying thats ok, unlike baseball there actually is a lot of crying in quitting.  You should feel very good about that, keep practicing and remember to reward yourself for a fine performance...

Hi Kettles,

I know exactly how you feel when you go to the doctor with "the never ending cold" to get your meds and inhalers, I am 24 and went through the exact same thing last week which is exactly why I am attempting this again, when i went to my doctor he basically told me... you have chronic bronchitis and until you quit smoking its never going to go away .... and like usual he gave me a prescription and sent me on my way. I have had to go to the hospital at times because my oxygen levels were in the 70% range and i couldn't breathe, and they look at you and shake their heads when you say "I smoke".... I have been quit for 4 days now and already I am finding that I can breathe better and I am using my inhalers less! good luck!! Another option that the nurse at my doctors office gave me was to buy a game boy or PSP type system and just play it whenever you get a craving that's how she quit and shes been smoke free for over 10 years... I hate video games or I may have tried it  :)

Hi Kettles!

Amazing job beating that craving! That takes so much strength!

You certainly have the drive and determination to get through this.  Take a look at the Emergency Coping Plan in Tools and Resources. Keep this handy for when you go through a crave like this again.  This will help give you steps to follow if it just gets to be too much.  Also, be sure to post in the support group when you are having a bad crave.  There is normally a Health Educator or member here to help you through it.

Keep up the great work!

During this past crave, what did you learn about yourself going through this?

Welcome back Kettles! I remember your posts! The last time I was here was in the Spring of 02. The SSC  was very new then and there weren't many smober members. I quit for around seven months, picked up and  didn't give the SSC another thought till the Spring of 08. Don't do what I did. I smoked for 42 years. Quit now! Breathe easy! You can do this!

Hi everyone, I'm new to this site. Actually, I joined months ago, maybe even a year ago, I don't remember... poked around a bit, got scared, closed the window, proceeded to forget it existed. Then recently I got bronchitis, again again again. I was starting to feel like I had it all the time. I hate going to a doctor and saying "I can't stop coughing, oh yes I smoke". It's embarrassing, I'm only 22 and getting bronchitis a few times a year. I feel like an idiot. This last time, I realized I didn't just feel like an idiot - I was one. That was the final straw.

So I meandered back over here - actually forgot I had an account already - and started the steps.  Three whole days come and gone, never done that before! Yesterday was incredibly difficult, lots of school and life stress. Grabbed my car keys and went to to go buy a pack... went back inside and worked through it with water and deep breaths (okay, and crying!). Ten minutes later I was so proud of myself for working through that. It was so intense I almost can't believe I resisted the urge, I'm really confident now!

Today is a little better than yesterday, feeling pretty good now!
